‘The Penguin’ Episode 2 Recap: Inside Man

The Penguin
At the start of ‘The Penguin’ episode 2, titled Inside Man,’ we see Sophia in panic mode because the one person she truly adored—her brother Alberto—has been killed, and it’s hit her hard. Alberto’s death completely shatters her because he was her lifeline, the only one who actually visited her while she was stuck in Arkham. Alberto made her a promise that once he got her out, they’d work together to take over the Falcone Family. Now, with Alberto gone, that dream is looking pretty shaky.  Major Spoiler Warning…

Sal Maroni Shoulders the Blame of Alberto’s Death

Word gets to Maroni that Alberto’s body was found missing a pinky, and all eyes are on him. Everyone’s convinced Sal Maroni is behind it. So, Sal wastes no time and calls Oz to the prison for a little chat. He lays it out, saying it’d be really easy for him to twist the story and pin Alberto’s death on Oz. Penguin’s no fool, and he tells Sal he could do that, sure, but he’d be throwing away a golden chance.  The Falcones are busy licking their wounds and are distracted right now—this is the perfect moment to take them down. Sal decides to go ahead with Oz’s plan and agrees to take the fall for Alberto’s death. In exchange, Penguin promises to help him steal the shipments he has been promised. To cover his bases, Sal tells Ervad, a cop on his payroll, to keep a close eye on Oz and make sure nothing goes sideways.  On the night of the transfer, Ervad and Sal’s crew ambush the convoy and make off with the drugs. Oz, as agreed, plays the victim perfectly. He claims that if it weren’t for him, more of his men would’ve been killed.

Sophia Falcone Hires a Washed-up Detective

Sophia couldn’t care less about the stolen drugs and is instead hell-bent on finding her brother Alberto’s killer and making an example out of them. But when she presses Luca and Viti about it, she’s bluntly told that how the family handles revenge is none of her business, not exactly what she wanted to hear. Meanwhile, Oz knows he’s never gonna win over Viti and Luca, no matter how hard he tries. So, he sets his sights on someone more… vulnerable. He corners Sophia and tries to plant the idea that she should take what’s rightfully hers and be the one running the drug business. Also, to stir the pot, Oz suggests that Viti never really cared about her or Alberto and might even have her taken out if she steps out of line. Sophia doesn’t buy it, though. She still doesn’t trust Oz and brushes him off. Instead, she contacts a washed-up detective who used to be famous for sniffing out snakes in the grass. She hires him to dig into who tipped off the Maronis about the convoy heading to Robinsville.

Oswald in Trouble

At the funeral, Oz bumps into Sophia again, and the two start reminiscing. They joke about how Alberto would’ve hated the whole funeral service and probably would’ve ignored it to find a real party. Then, Oz opens up about how his brother’s death wrecked their mom—she didn’t even hold a service because she didn’t want to go through all the self-pitying. Mid-conversation, Sophia gets a call from the detective who has kidnapped Ervad from the hospital. Major problem. This is a huge issue because if Ervad talks, Oz will be in trouble. Nadia asks her men to kill Oz, but he buys himself a few more days, promising to “handle” the situation. As an extra lifeline, he hands Nadia some incriminating photos of Viti having an affair with Luca’s wife.

Castillo is Framed, and Oz Survives

Halfway into The Penguin Episode 2, Os realizes that Sophia’s the one behind Ervad’s kidnapping, not Luca or Viti. He knows if Ervad starts talking, he’ll be dead by sundown. So, Oz sneakily hints to Luca and Viti that Sophia’s got one of Maroni’s guys locked up in the basement. While Viti and Luca are grilling Sophia, Oz sneaks into the basement. Castillo is framed for Ervad's murder_ The Penguin The original plan is to pin Alberto’s murder on Viti, but when Vic fails to plant the evidence in Viti’s car, Oz has to improvise, and silencing Ervad becomes the new plan. After Ervad is killed, Luca locks the mansion down and orders his men to search everyone for a knife.  Thinking quickly, Oz picks a fight with Viti, causing a scene. When Castillo steps in to break it up, Oz slyly slips the knife into Castillo’s jacket. Sure enough, the knife is found, and Castillo tries to defend himself, claiming innocence, but Luca shoots him.

Sophia Agrees to Work With Oz

After the whole Ervad incident, Luca suggests Sophia take a little “vacation” and get out of Gotham for a bit. Sophia agrees, but her face gives it away that she has no plans of leaving town.  By the end of ‘The Penguin,’ episode 2, she meets up with Oz and shows him a bag of diamonds. Turns out, these were the same ones Castillo stole after killing Alberto. These diamonds were supposed to be Alberto’s investment in his new drug empire. Sophia’s done playing by everyone else’s rules. She’s tired of Viti and her uncle Luca calling all the shots. She wants to take control of her life and the entire Falcone crime family. But she also knows that she can’t do it alone. She needs someone who is slick as a fox and, thus, agrees to work with Oz, aka The Penguin.
